A French manicure is an extremely elegant look that still remains popular today. You can do it on your own finger nails or toe nails. It can be difficult if you don’t have steady hands – but it is possible if you practice and use the right materials. Give yourself at least an hour to complete this procedure.
1. Old polish
Make sure that you take all of your old nail polish off and wash your hands, getting rid of all of the excess acetone or dirt that tends to get caught under nails.
If you need to get rid of the dark tones that tend to stain the nail, you can use an orangewood stick with the end covered in cotton and dip it in nail polish, rubbing it along the edges.
2. Lenght
Regardless of their length, clip the nail straight across in one direction and keep the corners rounded slightly. You are aiming for an oval squared shape; you can achieve this by using a filing with a fine grade side as well.
3. Cuticle remover
Next, use a cuticle remover in order to improve the look of cuticles. Also look into some creams that will help to improve the overall look of your nails and hands.
4. Prepare
You can prepare a nail soak by putting a few drops of almond oil into a bowl of warm water. Allow your hands to soak for about 5 minutes in the bowl and then pat your hands dry.
5. Twist
Next, you will want to twist a piece of a water moistened cotton swab onto the end of the orangewood stick. Use this to push back your cuticles. Make sure that you do not cut them because you can risk nicking the skin.
6. Exfoliating
By exfoliating your hands with a body scrub you will have soft and fresh hands. Finish by taking another cotton ball that has nail polish remover on it to clean the nails again.
7. Start
You can start with the pinky finger by putting on a thin base coat to all 10 of your nails.
8. Neutral shades
Use a neutral or pink shade that is similar to the color of your nail bed. Paint the nails, allow them to dry and wait two minutes before reapplying. When you are painting the nails, you should be aware that it is good to always have a thinner coat. A side of the brush should be wiped on the bottle, while the other side should be used to paint. For optimal results use 3 strokes, down the center and on each of the sides.
9. Paint naturally
Paint your naturally white tip of the nail with an opaque weight. When using the popular French manicures, the white strip is laid straight across the nail. If the polish is allowed to curve with the natural nail it will look much longer. You can prevent chipping the polish by going over the edge; you should then wrap the polish under your nail.
10. Last
Last, any errant polish should be cleaned up by using the cotton swab, putting polish remover on it and going carefully around the edges. Finish off with a top coat and allow for it to dry for 20 minutes.
